Meet & Greet the Artists: Gary Dyak & Sharon Meng

Julio 15th @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

“Paint and Pencil” is a dual exhibition featuring the intricate, vibrant works of Gary Dyak and Sharon Meng. While their final pieces show off masterfully handled traditional mediums, both artists share a remarkably modern behind-the-scenes process: they start with their own original photography, utilize AI technology to seamlessly blend floral imagery with rich, complex textures, and refine their compositions in Photoshop before ever touching a brush or pencil to paper.

  • Gary Dyak uses this digital-to-analog synergy to craft mesmerizing, richly layered colored pencil paintings that pull the viewer into deeply saturated, tapestry-like botanical worlds.
  • Sharon Meng brings her own signature touch to this innovative workflow, translating these complex digital conceptualizations into luminous watercolor and detailed colored pencil studies that radiate with soft light, delicate transitions, and dramatic color. Come experience this beautiful marriage of cutting-edge technology and classical craftsmanship—it is a show you won’t want to miss!

Artist Bios: Gary Dyak joined the Army in 1973 and was stationed in Turkey for three years. He moved to San Diego in 1976 and started his medical career in the Army Reserves. He received his nursing degree and worked in the medical field for 30 years, mostly in virology research at UCSD. At the age of 50, he began taking classes and attained an Associate degree in Fine Art. Gary works in several mediums, including graphite, colored pencil, ballpoint pen, and acrylics.

Sharon Meng is an artist and retired nurse-midwife whose creative journey has been shaped by a life of diverse experiences. After a rewarding career that included three years serving the Navajo Nation, she turned her passion for creation into an artistic pursuit. Initially working in colored pencil, she has recently expanded her practice to include watercolor. Meng is known for her detailed portraits in colored pencil and her vibrant floral studies in watercolor.
