Memory Cafés provide a supportive environment\, often described as a “meet up”\, designed to engage attendees in cognitive activities to perk up memory. \nThe goal of the Glenner Centers’ Memory Cafés is to keep attendees mentally and socially active\, which research shows is protective of brain health. Using Virtual Reality (VR) technology\, transport yourself to a variety of visually stunning & mentally stimulating environments. Take a walk along the beach\, explore an art museum\, or travel around the world\, without leaving the comfort of the Library. VR technology is used as a tool to cue memories\, stimulate the brain\, and provide positive experiences to support overall mental health. \nParticipants will put on a VR headset (30-minute sessions)\, which completely covers the eyes and immerses the wearer in a 360-degree digital reality to be seen through the lenses of the headset. The headset detects head movement\, allowing the user to be fully immersed in the experience. Simply move the head left or right to discover the surroundings! DESCRIPTION:Presented by Girl Scouts San Diego \n\nWhen: Thursday\, May 8 | 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM\nWhere: Grossmont Healthcare District’s Health & Wellness Library (9001 Wakarusa St. La Mesa\, CA 91942) \nPRE-REQUISITES REQUIRED: You must complete 2 hours of self-paced online pre-work before the class.\nMinimum 5 participants are required to host this training. \nThis registration is open to those residing in the following zip codes: 91910\, 91905\, 91906\, 91916\, 91917\, 91931\, 91934\, 91935\, 91941\, 91942\, 91945\, 91948\, 91962\, 91963\, 91977\, 91978\, 91980\, 92019\, 92020\, 92021\, 92040\, 92071. \nYouth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge\, how to listen nonjudgmentally\, give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge\, and refer a person to appropriate professional support and services. \nUpon completion\, participants will have the ability to recognize certain behaviors and signs that could identify a mental health crisis within youth. Participants will not be able to diagnose or treat these disorders but act as a liaison to connect the young person to resources. \nPlease note: this is a 6-hour in-person training. A lunch break\, as well as short breaks\, are included. Using Virtual Reality (VR) technology\, transport yourself to a variety of visually stunning & mentally stimulating environments. Take a walk along the beach\, explore an art museum\, or travel around the world\, without leaving the comfort of the Library. VR technology is used as a tool to cue memories\, stimulate the brain\, and provide positive experiences to support overall mental health. \nParticipants will put on a VR headset (30-minute sessions)\, which completely covers the eyes and immerses the wearer in a 360-degree digital reality to be seen through the lenses of the headset. The headset detects head movement\, allowing the user to be fully immersed in the experience. Simply move the head left or right to discover the surroundings! SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Depression in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Depression is common in older adults\, but it is not a normal part of aging. Join us for an informative and supportive discussion on how to recognize the signs of depression\, understand its causes\, and explore practical ways to improve mental well-being. Learn about treatment options\, lifestyle changes\, and community resources to help you or a loved one live healthier and happier lives. \nOmar Ghosn\, MD\, is a geriatric and consultation liaison psychiatrist. He works in the Senior Behavioral Health Unit at UC San Diego Medical Center. He also treats patients in the Intensive Outpatient Program and has a continuity outpatient clinic for geriatric psychiatry patients. Dr. Ghosn is a proponent of a biopsychosocial comprehensive approach to mental health care\, and his specialty and interests are in mood disorders\, the elderly\, and the medically ill population. Dr. Ghosn completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine\, where he also trained in consultation liaison. He completed residency training in psychiatry at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and earned his medical degree from the University of Balamand\, also in Lebanon.
