SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Oral Health and its Implications for Overall Health from Pregnancy to Geriatrics
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will discuss the importance of oral health and its implications on overall health including pregnancy outcomes\, children’s development\, heart disease\, diabetes\, and dementia.  The presentation will review how cavities and gum disease develop and ways to prevent these two common oral diseases. \nSpeaker: Dr. Whyte is the Chief Dental Officer for County of San Diego Health and Human Services. Having a full time Chief Dental Officer is a new role for the County and it demonstrates the County’s commitment to improving oral health throughout the lifespan for all San Diegans. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her pediatric dental residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn\, NY and stayed in the New York City metropolitan area practicing in a private practice until moving to San Diego in 2013 where she began working at a community health center. She then went on to complete her Master of Public Health degree at A.T. Still University with a dental emphasis. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is an advisory board member for the Anderson Center for Oral Health. She is also on faculty with the NYU Langone Health Pediatric Dental Residency Program affiliated with San Ysidro Health and on medical staff with Rady Children’s Hospital. She has authored numerous publications including an article on COVID-19 and its impact on dental utilization in a pediatric emergency room and urgent care setting and her most recent publication on harm reduction in the dental profession. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Healthy Aging & the Wise Mind
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to achieve healthy aging! We’ll discuss what are the normal changes in mood & sleep patterns as you age\, how to avoid depression\, and when to ask for help. There is an advantage in having specialized care by a geriatric psychiatrist\, and Dr. Yagudayeva has expertise in both the biological and psychological changes that occur with aging. She often works in tandem with a neurologist to evaluate\, diagnose and treat the psychiatric manifestations of dementia. \nSpeaker: Raisa Yagudayeva\, DO\, is a board-certified adult psychiatrist and board-certified geriatric psychiatrist. She completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a residency in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston\, where she served as Chief Resident. She earned her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has clinical expertise in treating older adults with a variety of psychiatric illnesses\, from neurobehavioral symptoms of dementia to chronic psychotic disorders. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: All About Autism
DESCRIPTION:Autism Spectrum Disorder currently is diagnosed in 1 in 36 children in the United States. Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with no known cause or cure. Autism is 4 times more common in boys than girls and impacts all racial\, ethnic\, and socioeconomic groups. During this talk\, you will learn about the diagnosis of autism\, the common symptoms and red flags\, current therapies and interventions\, and ways to support those impacted by autism. There will be information shared about community resources and activities for the autism community. \nSpeaker: Shirley Fett is a long-time volunteer board member with the Autism Society San Diego. Professionally\, she works for the Vista Hill Foundation in several of their programs. She has a Master’s in Community Health Nursing from SDSU and Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from UCSD. She is a Pediatric Mental Health Specialist. She is a frequent lecturer and trainer on autism spectrum disorder for medical professionals and community partners.
