This event will explore: \n\nThe health impacts of tobacco and nicotine use on young people\nReal-life story from a community activist who has seen the effects firsthand.\nA breakdown of current tobacco products\, including the wide variety of vapes and flavored options that are popular among youth.\nActionable strategies for families and communities to intervene\, support prevention\, and advocate for healthier environments.\n\nWhether you’re concerned about a loved one\, curious about the latest trends\, or ready to take action\, this conversation is a space to learn\, connect\, and empower change. \nSpeakers:\nHao Howie Tran\, MD\, FACC\, FHFSA\nDr. Tran is a board-certified cardiologist specializing in treating advanced heart failure patients. Dr. Tran is the medical director of the Heart Failure Program\, and the medical director of the Cardiogenic Shock\, Mechanical Circulatory Support\, and Left Ventricular Assist Device programs. He specializes in treating complex cases of heart disease\, leading to heart transplantation or mechanical circulatory support devices. As an associate professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine\, Dr. Tran instructs medical students\, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in heart failure\, left ventricular assist devices\, and heart transplantation\, as well as review articles\, editorials and book chapters. Dr. Tran is a designated fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a fellow of the Heart Failure Society of America. He is the regional president-elect of the American Heart Association for San Diego and Southwest Riverside. He completed medical training in advanced heart failure\, mechanical circulatory support and transplant cardiology at the University of California\, San Diego School of Medicine. He completed a general cardiology fellowship\, residency and internship at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Tran earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. \nLouise Brandy\, MBA\nLouise is a seasoned technology executive and “serial volunteer” for the American Heart Association\, currently serving as the Giving Society Ambassador for the American Heart Association San Diego & Southwest Riverside\, along with being past Chairs for the 2023 Stroke & Heart Walk\, and 2025 Go Red For Women Luncheon. She is an inspiring speaker\, blending strategic leadership with heartfelt advocacy. Her work is deeply shaped by her marriage to Mycle Brandy\, a four-time stroke survivor who walked across America three times to inspire others to keep up with their recovery. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: What it Means to Participate in a Clinical Trial - A Look into Cancer Research
DESCRIPTION:There are often many questions about clinical trials\, such as when and where one might be an option. Join us for a chance to explore clinical trials and how they can be a treatment option for some patients with cancer. This could be the first type of treatment received\, or one after. You will learn what is involved in a clinical trial including a patient’s journey through various procedures\, assessments\, and what you might experience during enrollment. A question-and-answer portion will follow discussion. \nDanica Griffin is the Lead Clinical Research Specialist in Oncology and has been with Sharp since 2020. Other roles she has held include being a Clinical Research Coordinator in Pediatric Cardiology at Rady Children’s Hospital and a Project Manager and Clinical Research Navigator at Northwestern/ Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. \nMichael Lowry is a Clinical Trials Specialist in Oncology and has been with Sharp since 2020 as well. He works with oncologists to help connect patients to clinical trials and works to remove barriers for study participants and guide them after they are enrolled in a clinical trial. She has been working in the field of both inpatient and outpatient diabetes care for over 30 years as a Registered Dietitian and as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.  She has worked with patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes that need assistance with blood glucose control\, establishing meal plans and educating patients on their diabetes medications. He works in the Senior Behavioral Health Unit at UC San Diego Medical Center. He also treats patients in the Intensive Outpatient Program and has a continuity outpatient clinic for geriatric psychiatry patients. Dr. Ghosn is a proponent of a biopsychosocial comprehensive approach to mental health care\, and his specialty and interests are in mood disorders\, the elderly\, and the medically ill population. Dr. Ghosn completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine\, where he also trained in consultation liaison. He completed residency training in psychiatry at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and earned his medical degree from the University of Balamand\, also in Lebanon. Gain practical tips\, everything from picking the correct walking shoes\, to the biomechanics of walking and how it benefits one’s overall cardiac fitness\, to incorporate walking into your daily routine for a healthier\, happier life! \nRichard Armenta earned his PhD in Epidemiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine\, Department of Family Medicine and Public Health and San Diego State University Graduate School of Public Health. He is a social epidemiologist with over 15 years of experience conducting research to improve health equity. In his research\, he collaborates with communities to conduct community-driven research that address priorities. He has conducted research on HIV and other infectious diseases and has helped develop and run evidence-based programs to address chronic diseases in underserved communities. Additionally\, Dr. Armenta serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Training\, Research\, and Educational Excellence (CTREE) at CSUSM.
