News from Grossmont Healthcare District

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency governed by a five-member board of directors elected by East County region voters, will have a new member on its board following the recent November 2008 general election. Three other current board members were elected to new terms.

The current GHD board members who were elected to four-year terms included Jim Stieringer, board president, who received 72,380 votes, followed by board vice-president Deborah McElravy with 71,690 votes and board treasurer Michael Emerson with 63,719 votes.

Stieringer, McElravy and Emerson were among six candidates vying for three seats. Stieringer has served on the GHD board since 1992. McElravy was appointed to fill a vacant seat in December 2006, after serving on the GHD from 2000 to 2004. Emerson was appointed in May 2008 to serve the vacancy created by the retirement of board member Bob Yarris, who had served on the GHD board since 1992.

The new GHD board member is Dr. Michael Long, a retired neurologist, who defeated appointed incumbent Shirley Apple Murphy. Long received 80,541 votes to win the three-candidate field for a two-year term. In June of this year, Murphy was appointed to the seat held by the late Dr. John Hardebeck, who passed away in April 2008. Long was elected to serve the remaining two years of Hardebeck’s term.

The Grossmont Healthcare District supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region and serves as landlord of Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa on behalf of East County taxpayers. The District’s five-member board of directors represent nearly 500,000 people residing within the District’s 750 square miles. For more information about GHD, visit www.grossmonthealthcare.org.
