The Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, a public library specializing in healthcare information, located at 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa, will host an open house to celebrate its fifth anniversary during regular library hours from Tuesday, Oct. 23 to Saturday, Oct. 27. The library, which opened in 2002, is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
The public is invited to attend during the week-long celebration and enjoy cookies, plus an exclusive display of six prints made from oil paintings by famed western artist and former El Cajon resident Olaf Wieghorst. The prints, on loan from the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center, feature three horses next to an old Cottonwood tree, horses drinking at a watering hole at the edge of a canyon, two cowboys studying a long-ago abandoned trail, two cowboys overlooking Salt River Canyon in Arizona, an adobe home and a Spanish caballero. Also on display is a portrait of Olaf Weighorst painted by Muriel Delaplane.
In addition, as a tie-in with the five-year anniversary, Kathy Quinn, library director, said library patrons are invited to guess how many nickels are in a clear, plastic jar on display at the library. The person closest to the correct number will be eligible to receive a $5 prize. Winners need not be present at daily drawings to claim prizes. The nickels are on loan from Torrey Pines Bank branch, 8379 Center Dr., La Mesa.
According to Quinn, the library’s monthly visitor count has risen this year to the highest levels in the library’s history. The library, which offers free health-related resources, including an extensive selection of on-line information for consumers, is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region.
