GHD helps children with disabilities participate in after-school programs
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors has unanimously voted to grant $25,000 to Kids Included Together (KIT) San Diego, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps children with disabilities participate in after-school recreational and social activities.
GHD said its funds to KIT will help increase participation activities for an estimated 215 children who live in the East County during the 2006-2007 school year.
Currently, KIT facilitates the inclusion of children with disabilities at a number of schools and recreation centers in the East County, including Boys & Girls Clubs of East County, Christian Youth Theatre, Cameron Family YMCA in Santee, Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, La Mesa Methodist Preschool, Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Preschool, TLC Preschool, Calvary Chapel Preschool, Santa Sophia Preschool, Holy Trinity Preschool and recreation centers in Santee, El Cajon and La Mesa. KIT said its efforts help deter children with disabilities from living in isolation.
A KIT spokesperson said the organization hopes to use the GHD funds to provide additional after-school childcare services at school sites that are part of four local school districts, including Cajon Valley, La Mesa-Spring Valley, Lakeside Union and Lemon Grove Elementary.
KIT, founded in 1997, specializes in providing training for community based organizations committed to including children with disabilities into their existing recreational, social and child-care programs.
The Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency formed in 1952, supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego's East County region and serves as landlord of Grossmont Hospital on behalf of local taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent nearly 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County.
