The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego's East County region, recently awarded educational scholarships to two Grossmont College nursing students.

Recipients of the 2005-2006 GHD Richard Bea Memorial Nursing Scholarship included $3,000 to Nara Kayne and $1,500 to Wendy Gray-Bois. Both of them reside in La Mesa. GHD's scholarship program, established in 2000, is named after the late GHD board member who served from 1996 to 1999.

Applicants were required to have completed one year in a registered nursing program and provide evidence of current enrollment, along with evidence of community volunteer work, a letter of recommendation from a nursing instructor and an essay discussing "nursing in my community."

Kayne, who serves as president of Grossmont College's National Student Nurses' Assn. chapter, wrote in her essay, "Quitting my job as a real estate professional to pursue my passion for nursing was a big jump...but I truly feel a need and desire to help people in my community."

Gray-Bois wrote in her essay, "(In nursing), you are responsible for another human being who is going through a life-changing event. They are counting on you to give them excellent medical care...and make their lives a little better. Nursing isn't easy, but if it were easy, we wouldn't have a shortage."

The Grossmont Healthcare District, formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, which opened in 1955, encompasses 750 square miles of San Diego's East County. Its five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, represent nearly 500,000 East County residents.
